Most Sundays, I make a note of what I read, listened to, and watched during the previous week. I publish a part of my list here.

Highlights

Annie Ernaux’s writing explores not only her own life experience but also that of her generation, her parents, women, anonymous others encountered in public space, the forgotten. The main themes threaded through her work over more than four decades, are: the body and sexuality; intimate relationships; social inequality and the experience of changing class through education; time and memory; and the overarching question of how to write these life experiences.

Michael Hobbes and Aubrey Gordon debunk the junk science behind health and wellness fads on their podcast Maintenance Phase. Hobbes and Gordon’s work unpacks the core of societal fatphobia, ableism, and other social structures that maintain and perpetuate harm. The podcast addresses health misinformation and disinformation with much-welcomed empathy and humour.

99% Invisible is a sound-rich, narrative podcast hosted by Roman Mars about all the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about — the unnoticed architecture and design that shape our world. I am currently listening to the back catalogue of the podcast (481/576 episodes remaining as of when I pressed publish here). I am also reading the book, The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design by Roman Mars and Kurt Kohlstedt. I love Articles of Interest by 99PI alum, Avery Trufelman, which began as a critically acclaimed, mini-series within the 99% Invisible podcast, and is now its own separate independent production.

A podcast about the Supreme Court of the United States, More Perfect bypasses the wonkiness and tells stories behind some of the court’s biggest rulings. Recent seasons have included explainers on landmark decisions and on amendments to the to the United States Constitution. I have finished listening to nearly the entire back catalogue of this podcast, so I welcome suggestions on podcasts or documentaries about constitutional law in other countries.
